The good things about EMR in my setting are
– Easy to access: Medical records of each patient can be accessed easily anywhere in the hospital (and for some situations, access minor necessary details from outside of the hospital can be done) so when referring the patient from one department to another it is much easier to communicate and provide continuity of care.
– Prevent data loss: Keeping medical records in the electronic system can prevent data loss compares to the traditional paper-based medical record. The EMR system in my hospital regularly backs up the data, so it is much more reliable and assured that the data will not be lost.
– Can be used for another purpose such as improving quality of care and research. It saves time to redo the database and prevent input errors. The bad things about EMR in my setting are
– Not all user-friendly: Many health care personnel (especially old age) does not have enough skills to deal with the newer EMR system, so it is struggling for them and can cause a burden.
– Confidentiality: Since EMR makes it easier to access data, sometimes it is too easy to access personal data and privacy might be breached.
– Need training and time to adapt: If the system changes (which is necessary for the system to be improved), it needs training and adaptation period for workers, which sometimes become a struggle in the workflow.-

I don’t have an EMR experience but I generally do agree with Auswin’s points raised. Digitalization promises ease of access to its users; however, not all are accustomed to embrace it. As per personal experience, it is the elderly who are lagging behind the adoption of these electronic e.fforts Other factors include the difficulty of embracing change. We term it in the Philippines as “nakagawian”, pronounced as na-ka-ga-wi-an. Every change has its own set of advantage and disadvantages but marching towards a digitized healthcare, EMR suppliers should still be inclusive of the intended population regardless of age. As per the side of the institution, they should advocate and listen to the employees since these employees are the main users of EMR. Appropriate training and feedback mechanisms should be in place. This is line with the previous course tackling Change Management such that, inability to create a sense of urgency would result to failure of adoption.
Data loss, whether traditional or electronic, may be unavoidable. The institution must be prepared in such events and protect its patients against fraud or malicious activities.

I agree with Auswin’s answer to the pros and cons of EMR. I think the most concerning issue is confidentiality. Since it is online and easier to access, data security needs to be strengthened to prevent data breaches and leaks that can hurt patients’ privacy.

Prevent data loss is very good point. With EHR, we can back up data to remote site and also to cloud storage that is very helpful in preventing data loss.
And I think that about Confidentiality, it might be better if we apply a decent policy about data accessibility, such as leveling data in to a few different confidential levels and assign each level to different authorized users, thus the more sensitive data can be accessed only by the higher level officer or officer who assigned to take responsibility.

The good points of EMR introduction:
– Improved operational efficiency and reduced waiting time
– Reduced storage space of patient records
– Data can be accessed from anywhere in the facility
– Technical capability to import outsourced dataThe bad points of EMR introduction:
– It takes time for staff to get used to the system, may need to hire system operators
– Review of operational procedures may be necessary
– Stable power supply is necessary-

I agree with TARO about to adopt EMR we have to Review of operational procedures. Personally, it takes time but it might be good to do this to lean the process of works as well.

The rest who come in to post on this topic you do not need to reinvent the arguments on good and bad of EMR but if you can try yo participate in the discussions we already have then that could be more interesting. Also if you would like to share your experiences of EMR as a user or the implementing person then that would also be useful.

From my experience, I had a bad experience with the EMR, even though I know its usefulness. It occurs when my department tries to adopt the EMR system in the IPD setting. Firstly, I found that the provided notebook was not enough for many users and did not work properly. Secondly, the interface of the EMR is not user-friendly, so you have to spend more time to complete individual patients, but you have to complete all ward rounds within a specific time limit. However, they provide an intensive course to prepare you and a hotline for helping you; it is still challenging to understand and not practical during the service ward round. Lastly, many complex orders, procedures, or drugs still need paper-based input, so the adoption of EMR in my department failed due to many reasons mentioned above.

Thank you for sharing the experience. It reminded me of the Leading change in Health Informatics COURSERA (plan-do-act-study) – Analyse and iterate. Maybe your case needs this.

Based on my experience in the Malaria Program, the good things about EMR are:
– Better and complete data availability. individual data available
– Ease of doing data analysis, before there was EMR, the available data was aggregated data, so the data analysis carried out was very limited
– Improved data quality, data validation becomes easier so that the level of data confidence increases.Bad things about EMR are:
– The need for device and network availability. there are still remote areas in Indonesia that have network problems -

From my experience, as a medical statistic officer, using EMR has many advantages. Back then staff need to go to medical record division to take the paper-based medical record folder by folder which is time-consumed and risk of loss of those medical record. Staff need to manage time to borrow the medical record in case of patient visit hospital at that time. In the limit of time, staffs need to review the patient data and record the medical code as fast as possible and it may cause some errors for those medical code. Using medical record makes staff no longer take the paper-based medical record in their hands, they can retrieve and review the patient’s data as in detailed as they can, according to the user’s authorization. These can reduce the risk of medical record’s losing and decrease the mistake in medical coding. On the other hands, EMR using may not quite user-friendly in some cases. Some of doctors do not familiar with EMR system tend to write the patient’s data by their handwriting and need the process to scan to the system again and cause duplication of work.

My workplace is not a healthcare setting; therefore, we don’t use EMR (I have experience using it while internships only) but I agree with all opinions here that EMR is easy to access and convenient for healthcare professionals to retrieve data on real-time basis. It can prevent data loss and can be used across departments, good for patients who visit several sites. However, we need to be concerned about data confidentiality and data security. EMR also affects healthcare professionals’ workflow because it takes time to get trained on how to use the new system. Therefore, it might create a burden to the users during the first launch.

My setting is a Chief Information Officer for a private hospital and I am now working on implementation of EHR. I would like to share my view briefly.
Good things
– Data Utilization : EHR can enhance how we utilize data. It is essential to adopt EHR to turn the organization to data driven organization. Abundant priceless information collected in EHR can be utilized to generate many insight in aspect of health services and business insight.
– Data Accessing regulation : Using decent EHR can prevent us from unauthorized accessing to patients’ data. EHR usually has function to authorize and can track when and who access data.
– Health Information Exchange : Adoption of HIE is now increasing. EHR can help us to do HIE between hospitals including between small network of hospital, nation-wide, and world-wide.And I agree with other good and bad, such as prevent data loss, cost of implementation, needs of training were already by other classmates.

Good point on data authorization…sometimes we try to access patient’s data unintentionally, just because it was easy to access.

In my experience, the Implementation of EMR plays a vital role in the outcome of the patient’s health. It also makes the life of all employees easier as all data are assessed within different departments. However, it is not easy to start with the new technology. Some employees are excited to adopt the change management others don’t.
I agree with the bad handwriting by the healthcare workers which misinterprets the data. -

In my opinion, the EMR brings the massive benefits. We can completely access the data anywhere and anytime through the EMR. We can share the data across departments or buildings with just one-click, instead of running around the hospital just to send to document. It is time-saving. The data is stored in the EMR so we don’t need to carefully protect the documents from fire, moist, light and etc. Moreover, we don’t need to panic about whether the documents are lost or not. It is also easier to find the document from, like, 15 years ago.
Anyways, the implementation of EMR can be such a nuisance. First of all, the typo when inputting data because, you know, we presses the buttons on the keywords instead of writing on the paper. Some personnel are computer-illiterate so when it comes to EMR which required to use computer, you can see the issue here.

As a general practitioner, the electronic medical record (EMR) play a crucial role in the real practice. Firstly, the system helps the user to systematically access to patient’s information such as today’s visit data, past history, surgical procedure and also the previous imaging which need for the present diagnosis and further. management. Secondly, EMR is better than traditional paper-based system in less spent of time of searching the information of patient. According to less spent time, thirdly, the EMR no need the human for searching the patient profile in paper. In the other hand, EMR is the modern technology that implementation in the healthcare system. So, EMR need time to learn by the older health officer. In the addition, the EMR required the technician for solving the problem which paper-base medical record system not required.
