A professional in public health or health informatics (an informatician) requires knowledge and skills from multi-disciplines. According to your background, could you briefly discuss what kinds of knowledge and skills that you would need to gain in order to improve your profession in public health or health informatics.

The knowledge and skills that I would need to improve are multi-disciplinary because health systems comprise not only healthcare workers and IT professionals, it also comprises of people. The following list identifies some of the skills.
1) Programming skills (so I can work and understand the programmers and guide them towards solving issues safely and ethically)
2) Database management skills (so I can work with the database administrator to store the data securely)
3) Network systems management skills (so I can work with the network administrator to exchange data safely)
4) Web designing skills (the use of EMR and EHR is improving in Myanmar, and all of that data needs a front-end interface to input the data, intuitive website design skill is essential)
5) Data analysis and visualizing skills (we need to analyze and present the findings in a comprehensive manner so that an evidence-based decision-making process can be a reality)
6) Communication skills (we need to communicate clearly and succinctly to advocate better use of data in decision making)
7) Leadership skills (as health systems comprise not only healthcare workers and IT professionals, it also comprises of people, we need to have empathy and compassion to understand other perspectives)All of the above skills will help improve teamwork and understanding with each other, so when we create electronic health information systems in ethnic regions of Myanmar, the stepwise procedure of
1)Planning
2)Health Data standards integration
3)Data Privacy
4)Systems Design
5)Visualization, Analysis, and reporting can be done efficiently and effectively.New technologies are being invented daily, weekly, and yearly, like A.I, mobile data entry, and Telehealth. As health informaticians, we also should develop a growth mindset (openness to learning new things) and try to improve the health systems iteratively while documenting and communicating the steps to all the stakeholders of the health systems so that we can create public goods which can be used by other states, regions, and countries.

Interesting idea to have a growth mindset among health informaticians working in multidisciplinary teamwork. While a fixed mindset is an obstacle and should not be present in a dynamic situation, an open-minded person with a growth mindset helps the organization to develop creatively.
Best.

Great! I like that you mention about growth mindset, this is very important. It’s also good that you can assess yourself on knowledge and skills that you need to improve. Although we might not be able to provide some of knowledge in our current program, such as basic programming, you can self-learn from the life-long learning platform that we provide (coursera and Linkedin learning).

A public health specialist or expert in health informatics is ought to have an integrated perspective because they will be targeting a large group of people that is highly complex nature. As a young professional working for disease prevention by embracing the role of health informatics, a proportionate foundation in management, statistical analysis, and information system is essential and I have an urge to acquire these skills.
Management skill in health informatics helps us to bond a solid team when working with inter-related experts such as data scientist, data analyst, and IT guys in order to lead the systematic process of tactical planning and generate well-qualified information. Without management skill, there is no interface to bridging these specialists. Also, management development is closely related to law and political science but is good when we deal with prudent errands such as influencing decision-makers to make a change through data dissemination and advocacy.
Statistical data analysis, especially epidemiological analysis is another prime skill that I need to gain for applying health informatics. Visualizing disease pattern, trajectory, as well as cold and hot spots identification mapping is important to spotlight the vulnerable groups. A statistical / predictive modeling is the ultimate analytical skill which can help me to arrange the prudent intervention strategy appropriately. This is the branch of statistical science but applicable for public health, and I think that a health informatician should be able to harness it.
The last crucial skill for a health informatician is information system (IS) at a glance which actually is a driver for change. Admittedly, learning the whole subjects of IS and IT tools seems surpass my expectation, but familiarity with at least the basic principles and practices of information system is becoming important. I think that understanding the concept of essential programming, networking, application designing, reporting and visualization, cloud computing, and machine learning is part of my goal.

To be the public informatician, I need to be familiar with knowledge and skill in many multi-discipline. Because I have learned about medicine, followings are other knowledge and skills I would like to gain.
1. Epidemiology and preventive medicine. Since I have learned deeply in my subspecialty, I need to catch up with current knowledge and something new about them to the work regarding public health.
2. Basic of programming. This can help me to understand programmers and to be familiar with the technical terms used to communicate with them.
3. Information system development. I can use it develop the system to collect the data. A well-designed system will have some advantages during collection, analysis, and presenting the data.
4. Statistical analysis. This would be another knowledge that has to be used during analysis of the information I gathered to produce new wisdom.
5. Communication and leadership skill. I would like to gain these skill to be the good leader in managing some projects which needs to communicate with other people.Thank you.

To enhance better health for populations by using health informatics, knowledge related to health information, technology and people management have to be combined. To build health informatics system, an informatician is one part of a team who has to take part for overall project management and connect between many expertises. Based from my experience, working in individual pharmacy units, there are still many skills which I expect to develop myself.
Firstly, Health information related skills need to be enhanced. My current work is related to health but it doesn’t intensively relate to large information management. In order to make sure that data will be collected in suitable ways and results can be used to create decision making, some topics such as data management, statistical analysis, mathematical modeling, visualization skills and laws could be developed to create effective flow from data to wisdom.
Secondly, To create information system, Information technology is one part that helps to create quality systems and effective information exchange. Infrastructure, coding languages, data network, standard for data connecting and standard for data security are interesting for me to understand some concepts and be able to communicate with other IT team expertise.
Lastly, human skills and communication could be built to support the ability of team management. Informatics projects are massive and couldn’t be handled alone. Communication and planning skills are crucial to work as a team and create informatics system which could reach the user insight.Overall, Any details of knowledge and skill could be updated all the time. There could be new standards or methods for creating quality informatics systems. Skills for researching reliable references and filtering accurate information are also essential for self learning and problem handling.

From my point of view as a doctor, I think there are two major fields of knowledge that I need to be learned in order to develop a profession in health informatics.
firstly, management and business administration knowledge is very important because this career must work as a team manager who can put the right man on the right job to be able to set up a robust and well-functioning health information system. For example, important skills such as the ability to think analytically and strategically, communication skills, leadership skills, human resources Skills, and problem-solving skills.
secondly, Mathematics and computer knowledge are essential tools for transforming ideas into real results. In order to design a health information management system to function properly, a broad knowledge of system implementation is required from infrastructure design, network connectivity, programming, extracting useful insights, quality assurance, and deployment.
All in all, there are many things I have to learn and gain experience. Moreover, knowledge is updated every day, so the key skill that will help me achieve my goals is lifelong learning.

Based on my background in clinical research and IT, Developing a health informatics system requires strong project management skills besides the essential knowledge in many areas to work and achieve positive communication with multidisciplinary team members. I am looking to strengthen my skills in statistics and data analysis. Also to improve my knowledge about other professionals in healthcare and their roles as a party in any public health informatics. Also, understanding the legal issues and data privacy is important to be considered during the design and development of public health informatics.

I graduated with a doctor of pharmacy specializing in pharmaceutical care (aka. patient care).
Based on my background, The knowledge I would like to develop are:
1. Computer science: I rarely studied this kind of topic at my university or in high school. The coding or algorithm is really new to me. By gaining knowledge of Computer Science, I think I could understand more on a technical perspective as a health informatician.
2. Statistics: I have learned statistics in university but it mostly focuses on critical appraisal or application of statistics. I would like to dig deeper into the statistic analysis and interpretation. It would make me understand the data more.
3. Project management and communication skills: I really really for what the professor said in the lecture. Project management involving a multidisciplinary team is very challenging. Effective management and team communication are the keys to the success of every project. -

As my background of pharmacist, my past experiences were at hospital (a patient care) and drug store. I am now working as a pharmacist at clinical research site. I have been working with other departments, e.g. regulatory, management, and IT. There are many skills and knowledges that I would like to improve in my profession setting.
Firstly, information technology skills (also programming). I wish one day I could have a basic knowledge of IT in order to manage my data on hand, analyze, and utilize them in projecting and planning the work ahead. Yet, this will help me communicate with IT professions in more IT language and help me understand more in what are purposes of particular work that IT professions try to do.
Second, data management this is because if I were in a position who potentially have to manage the data. I wish to do the best for designing and collecting data as well as designing the database in order to support the outcomes.
Lastly, data privacy and security, I personally admit that data security is the utmost important for me. This is because if the data was leaked, it can cause crucial harm to not only subjects participated (in case we store personal subject information in the computer database system) but also the project or research that we conduct.
Even though I personally think that I have not much involved in health informatics. But to understand the skills and concepts, not only three mentioned above but also networking, visualisation, data design, and so on, will help me bring and apply them into my settings.

As a pharmacist with a clinical research background, the following knowledge and skills are needed to gain and get the overall concept and ensure the project works as planned.
– Psychological communication is the key point in every management and teamwork. Informatician is like the center of a team. We need to have good communication to bring all disciplines to work in a team and aim at the same goal. Other skills such as leadership, being open-minded, and flexible are also important skills.
– Information technology are crucial for PHI, and I still have very little background on this. To create a social impact, basic knowledge of IT can facilitate and scale up the health knowledge of society.
– Statistics is another interesting skill. Interpretation and analysis of the results can lead to a comprehensive overview of a project.
Lastly, I believe that we may not be the best in every skill, but at least we can understand and respect everyone in a team are sufficient to be a health informatics.

I am currently a physician, with medical background as well as some IT knowledge. To be a good health informatician, we need to deal with multiple disciplines effectively. It means that we also need basic knowledge in each particular field to be able to communicate and act as a ‘bridge’ between them. The most important skill in my opinion is a leadership skill. Like I have mentioned, we have to deal with different people who may be a specialist in their profession so we need to lead them with respect with a good communication skill.
Speaking of knowledge, in health informatics, statistics are very important as we need to handle with large data and make use of them. A knowledge in IT is of course as much crucial as we utilise them as a tool to help us deal with those large datasets, or big data. Besides, in health informatics, we are also considered from a different background. In our field, I have met pharmacists, software engineers, physicians, epidemiologists. Every one of us is equally important, because all background knowledge in each of our fields are required in health informatics. That is why it is wise for us to share our background knowledge and experience with each other.

Since health informatics needs a multi-disciplinary approach of three main aspects; (1) health and biological science such as medicine, public health and epidemiology, microbiology, and toxicology (2) computational and mathematical science such as information technology, statistics, and (3) management and social science which involved people such as human resources, organizational behavior, political science and law, and business administration. As a physician with a health background, the knowledge and skills that I need to gain more to improve my professional in health informatics would be
1) Public health, preventive medicine and epidemiology; since informatics focus more on disease prevention and health promotion of the population rather than treatment in an individual that I have been used to in my practice
2) Health Information system development; knowledge about system planning, application, requirement elements
3) Programming and information technology; even though we have IT professionals in the team, the basic programming and knowledge of IT will help us understand and communicate with each other better to reach the best-case scenario in informatics practice.
4) Health data standards and integration include a database system, design, data linking and integration and also data privacy and security. this would be the prerequisite basic knowledge in order to develop and manage the information system
5) Statistical analysis; to transform a lot of data into information that can use and help in decision-making.
6) Social and management skills, in terms of political science and law, business, and organizational behavior to understand more about the population and also to operate within a government context.
7) Communication and leadership skills; as an informatician who work with a multi-disciplinary team that is expert in their fields and has a variety of characteristic and working style, those skills will help everyone work well together.
