If you were replacing an old technology with a new one that is easier to use, what would the TAM suggest about it’s relative usefulness? (i.e. should it be at least as useful as the old technology?)

According to TAM, people’s intention to use a new technology is influenced by their perception of its usefulness. This means that if a new technology is seen as more useful than the old technology, people will be more likely to adopt it. For example, let’s say you’re replacing an old, clunky computer program with a new, more user-friendly one. According to TAM, people will be more likely to adopt the new program if they perceive it to be more useful than the old one.
But it’s not just the perceived usefulness of the new technology that determines whether or not people will adopt it. Other factors such as perceived ease of use, perceived compatibility, and perceived risk also play a role. For example, if people think the new technology is too difficult to use, they may be less likely to adopt it. If they perceive the new technology to be incompatible with the way they currently work, they may also be less likely to adopt it.
Additionally, the user’s prior experience with technology, training and support provided, and social influence can also impact the perceived usefulness of the new technology. The user’s personal characteristics such as their level of technology literacy and openness to change can also play a role in how they perceive the usefulness of the new technology. For example, if someone has never used a computer before, they may not find the new technology as useful as someone who is more tech-savvy.
So, in order to ensure successful adoption of a new technology, it’s important to consider all these factors and address any potential concerns or barriers that may impact the user’s perception of the new technology’s usefulness. This can be done through providing training and support, addressing any perceived risks or compatibility issues, and ensuring that the new technology is in fact more useful than the old technology.

Following the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) 2 framework that added and incorporated social influence and cognitive instrumental processes that affect perceived usefulness, designing intervention that would drive intentions of use is an excellent option in order to create usage behavior. This way helps decide how an individual within an organization responds to the new technology, whether they will replace old technology with a new one or not.
Intervention approaching social influence considers how the closest people or important people who have an image expose their influence to adopt new technologies and leave old ones. The exposed influence could be their experience using new technology and voluntarily suggesting how useful the new one is. This influence resulted in social pressure for someone to follow adopting new technology in order to be as same as the figure in their social group.
For cognitive instrumental processes, I argue that this approach is an evidence-based process, therefore, longitudinal intervention is needed until it is proven that the new technology can demonstrate the expected result. According to TAM 2, cognitive instrumental processes will lead to perceived usefulness, so there is an interactive effect between job relevance, output quality, and result demonstrability in determining perceived usefulness.

Fred Davis, the initiator of TAM frame work, defined perceived usefulness as the degree to which a person believes that using a particular system would enhance his/her job performance. Therefore, there might be many aspects of technology which can be evaluated in that particular job performance expectation, and depend on the type of technology and organization. Apart from the usefulness compared to the old technology, below are some other ideas.
Using this novel technology enables me to accomplish tasks more quickly.
Using this novel technology would increase my productivity.
This novel technology would enhance customer satisfaction.
The new technology has the interoperability with the silos data recording system.
Data will be managed more safely in this new technology compared to the old one.-

Your original ideas on what TAM would suggest are excellent. I like the recommendations about interoperability and security of data that might be able to be evaluated on older technologies and make people willing to adopt new ones.

Technology acceptance model (TAM) is a model to evaluate perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use on a new system or technology. Perceived usefulness is defined as the degree to which a person believes that using a particular system would enhance their job performance. Factors which associated with perceived usefulness are the followings.
1. The technology enhances quality of work, productivity, and effectiveness
2. The technology can control over their work.
3. The technology allows the users to work more quickly.
4. The technology makes their jobs easier to be accomplished. -

In my opinion, if my organization would like to implement the new technology with is easier to use.
I also expect the usefulness of be at least equivalence to the old one. However, since the cost of implementing new technology and maintaining system may costly. I think the usefulness of the new system should be superior comparing to the new one. The superiority can be considered in various aspect including
– Enhance productivity (decrease time, increase output)
– Enhance the quality of work: For example, increase the percentage of drug-related problems (DRP) detection after implementing the new EMR-pharmacy system
– Mitigate the existing risk(s) in the process: For example, decrease to number of malware attack after implementing the new hospital IT safety measures-

I like the idea of superiority comparison. This could help us effectively consider many aspects of usefulness.🙂

In the context of replacing an old technology with a new one that is easier to use, the TAM would suggest that the new technology is likely to be perceived as more useful and easier to use by the users. I think there are many perspectives to explain perceived usefulness. I think the new technology should cover the following areas.
– Having a short learning curve
– Improving work efficiency
– Increasing safety for customers and users
– Increasing the speed of data transmission or communication faster
– Making it easier for users to see the big picture and focus on the details. -

In order to adopt a new technology in place of the old one, you have to make sure that the new technology you are adopting will definitely help users accomplish their tasks more easier. That’s where TAM comes in to help us with. It is basically a quantitative way to measure users’ acceptance using multiple questions in a scale of 1-5 or 7 depends on its version, apparently. After piloting the new technology, it is essential to obtain users’ voices or opinion periodically, and eventually evaluate the new technology prior to discarding the old one. The original TAM measures two core factors including Perceived usefulness and Perceived ease of use, which I have mentioned earlier in the previous discussion 🙂

In order to replace an old technology with a new one, people who’re going to use it must first have good impression. By impressing them with a new one that is easy to use, developer should present performance benefits of new technology:
– How the new technology could help them on working
– How it helps them on lessening time, reducing workload, and magnifying quality of work
Not only represent the new technology just only good part, developer should listen feedback from those who use it. Also the feedbacks should be taking into consideration for ameliorating a better system and to achieve perceived ease of use from users. -
2023-03-16 at 11:56 pm #39810Tanatorn TilkanontParticipant
When replacing an old technology with a new one that is easier to use, at least it should be as useful as the old technology, if not more useful, to ensure user acceptance. If users perceive the new technology as less useful than the old one, they may be resistant to adopting it, even if it is easier to use.
To encourage the adoption of the new technology, it is important to communicate its benefits to the users and demonstrate how it can improve their productivity or performance. Involving users or key influencers during the technology’s design phase can impact their perception of the technology’s usefulness and ease-of-use, potentially reducing its perceived complexity. Users are more likely to accept a new technology if they perceive it to be less complex, so simplifying the technology’s user interface, providing clear instructions and guidelines, and offering training and support to users are all essential steps to increase new technology adoption.

To my understanding, TAM system theory in terms of usefulness, the new technology should improve performance of my job, so increased in productivity, effectiveness and quality. To compare with the old one, it’s about being fast, time saving, effort saving, cost reducing and overall usefulness.

I strongly agree that the new technology replacing the old one should be at least as useful as before. There will be many resources, such as workforce, investment, and time, needed in the process of technology implementation. So, it is nothing to implement the new technology without any improvement.
Other than the usefulness of the technology itself, awareness of all stakeholders on the usefulness of the technology is a vital factor to be considered. Thus, responders should communicate to all stakeholders to let them realize the usefulness.
