To the best of my knowledge, the application of the ICD standard in both public and private hospitals in Myanmar continues to face numerous challenges. Maybe I may not have observed well any substantial improvements in these areas within those settings. I would weigh on causing the difficulties in disease surveillance and public health analytics and research by not using the ICD standard in the healthcare settings in the country.
For instance, there have been efforts to establish a system for classifying the causes of death in hospitals in Myanmar using the ICD standard and utilizing this information to shape public health policies and intervention strategies based on these leading causes. I simply consider that may not succeed if a standardized coding system like ICD is not adhered to, and this non-compliance could have extensive consequences for the entire population, both present and future. It is also important to consider the potential regulatory and legal implications for healthcare providers if they do not utilize ICD codes.
