If you were replacing an old technology with a new one that is easier to use, what would the TAM suggest about it’s relative usefulness? (i.e. should it be at least as useful as the old technology?)

In my opinion, replacing old technology with the new one like an updated version of programs. If it claims to be useful as the old one and easier to use this might not be required the TAM assessment. However, if it is a major revision such as change into a different platform or device, require more input information, or make a big change in their workflow. It might need the TAM assessment again.

Replacing technology might come with purposes such as cost reduction, version changes, contract changes or improved process requirement. According to TAM, apart from external variables, perceived usefulness is also influenced by perceived ease of use. If the user believes that the new one is easy to use, it can influence the belief that the new one is as useful as the old one. The new technology may not as useful as the old one when considering external variables but in the process of replacing, the organization may use intervention directly to perceived ease of use. It can directly influence the intention to use and is relative usefulness or is making user feeling that it is useful.

To compare usefulness of new technology with an old one, we could ask this followings to assess perceived usefulness.
When using new technology compared to an old one
1. it improves user’s job performance
2. it saves user’s time
3. it gives users greater control over work
4. it enhances effectiveness on the job
5. it increases user’s productivity
6. it makes it easier to do jobs
if users have answer yes to these questions, it is implied that users perceive usefulness of new technology in job effectiveness, productivity and time savings aspect compared to an old one. -

Usefulness is not enough. One should also consider “Ease-of-use”. That is, availability, approachability, environmental pressures, among factors.

In case of replacing an old technology with a new one that is easier to use, as my work in the enterprise system implementation. The first step is to do the assessment process. This step will help to know the as-is problem and the pained point, for example, the manual process which is not simple, take times/work load and duplicate work. In my opinion, only ease of user is not enough. The user will be happy with the process or system if there are both ease of user and usefulness. The ease of user will effect to received the usefulness and the new technology should suitable and user friendly to use. These will impact to user behavior to use and receive the system.
