What are some specific ‘external variables’ that you think might influence an individuals’ perceived ease of use or perceived usefulness of a new technology?

I think one of the external variables that influence the individual perceived usefulness and ease of use is the result of the program that decrease their workload or work redundancy.
For example the EMR system in my hospital, nowadays we do not have a fully EMR system, we still use the paper-based medical record and make a photocopy of it as file storage in the EMR system. Some physicians feel uncomfortable with this new system because it might interrupt the eye-contact with their patients. However, for me, I appreciated this system so much because it is easier to review the patient’s previous medical record (especially for the case with a huge record) and it can solve the problem of missed or disappeared some pages of the medical record. Also, the system provides the medication history that can easily review, and it can be preprinted on the prescription order, this decreases the redundancy in rewrite the medication list on paper-based medical records and prescription orders.-

Great response! What might be some differences between you and your physician colleagues who feel uncomfortable with the new system?

I think the main difference is the personal adaptive mechanism. For me, initially, I also felt struggles with the new system because I have to type the patient’s hospital number for every single patient, and the system always down when a lot of physicians start to work at OPD and retrieve patients’ data at the same time.
After I got familiar with the new system and I perceived that the IT unit put a lot of afford into it and provide a prompt, easy access consultation. I opened my mind to notice the good thing about the new system and I found that the use of a semi-EMR system does not disturb human contact with my patient.

If the working-from-home system (set of hardware and software adopted to facilitate working from home) could be called a new technology, I think, Personal Life Affects and Primary System/Responsible Affects, might be some of the external factors that influence an individuals’ perceived ease of use.
Since the Covid-19 pandemic, I think many organizations have been struggling to adopt technology/system to facilitate their employee working from home. At my workplace, we have set up a system composed of a few hardware and software for that. It is sound good at first. Even it is on a voluntarily based, more than half of the staff requested to work from home. At beginning around 60% of the staff was working from home but now I believed more than 90% is working at the office. Apart from the fact that the pandemic in Thailand has been unfolding and it was not severe as expected, the reasons the working from home has been failed are mostly because of its effect on personal life and resources. Ranging from unable to manage work-life space at home, out-of-pocket for the system which not compensated by company i.e., internet subscription.
Lately, we have a survey on the issue as our organizational policy is heading to the working permanently for cost reduction. Some of the questions are if they would like to work from home or not and if not, what is the reason they do not want to. I do not know the result, but I speak with some staff and they disliked the WFH, in general, because the WFH systems which are a support system are not compatible with their primary working system/software/hardware. The performance of their primary system was affected as the system is compromised and unstable from some time. In the survey, I have given some comments that part from the system company should think about how to improve the working process and role and responsibilities altogether with adopting of system. The technology could not work well alone.

Yes, I think this does apply as a technology and that we could use the TAM to think about uptake of this technology. Do you think that people did not like WFH because of perceived ease of use or because of perceived usefulness? Or are there other factors that aren’t even considered in the TAM?

An external factor that I can think about apart from what explained in the TAM2 is TIMELINESS. The WFH system has been introduced for a long time but immediately getting popular because of the pandemic. It has been cleared because of perceived usefulness.
People decided to take the WFH because they thought it is useful. When they have experience using it, they faced some difficulties and stop using it because of the perceived ease of use.

I agree with Ameen that the COVID19 situation enhances the perception of usefulness and generates mandate situation for an online conference usage. In addition, perceived ease of use will be enhanced by a user-friendly interface and early troubleshooting.

Perceived Ease-of-Use (EOS)
– Approachability of digital devices
– Computer literacy
– Intuitiveness of the interface
– Fast responsiveness / interactivity
– Responsive design (RD) to viewport / unpredictability of user’s device
– Buglessness / tolerance to unpredictability of user’s input
– Getting help – can get the right Q&A quickly, if possible; otherwise, prompt Q&A session with humans (or machines that is adaptive enough)Perceived Usefulness (U)
– Escaping from past – realizing that what used to work can be better (positive); or it was so bad (negative)
– Embracing the possibility – it would be better if, this way
– Inevitability of the future and competition
– Environment / peer pressure (herd mentality)
– Pressure from the authorities / bosses
– Lack of workarounds -

For some specific ‘external variables’ in TAM model, they not the the manipulated factors as part of an experiment, but they affect to usage behavior and may exert some influence on the dependent variable under study.
The external factors that I am interesting are user/system experience. This effect to perceived ease of use or perceived usefulness of a new technology. For example in Thailand, there is the application which used to vaccine registration. This is deploy to Thai people who difference in age. The young people who can user the smart phone will accept that this application is easy to use and usefulness. It decreases time in vaccine request process, but in the older people who lack of knowledge and experience in technology or smartphone usage. They may can not receive the ease of user and usefulness and this may impact to the amount of vaccine request registers.
