Healthcare relies on dashboards for data visualization because they offer the ability to monitor patient outcomes, help physician and healthcare professionals to predict something that they want to know and help them make quick decisions. In addition, a good dashboard should feature a simple design that displays relevant charts and graphs instead of overwhelming text. It should provide accurate and up-to-date data, if possible, and be accessible from various devices such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops.

A dashboard for data visualization holds significant importance in public health, especially for monitoring and surveillance of infectious disease outbreaks. Dashboards provide real-time updates on the spread and severity of infectious diseases. Dashboards are a common platform to communicate vital information to diverse audiences in an easily understandable format. Timely and accurate information presented through dashboards assists healthcare professionals and policymakers make informed decisions regarding resource allocation, intervention strategies, and emergency responses.
Characteristics of the dashboard I considered are –
(1) It should display essential indicators related to public health.
(2) It should have a user-friendly interface.
(3) It should provide real-time updates and data feeds to ensure users can access the latest information.
(4) It should utilize data visualization techniques such as maps, graphs, and charts to represent complex data patterns visually.
(5) It should be mobile-compatible, allowing users to access critical information on the go, especially during emergency situations. -

From my perspective, a dashboard plays a crucial role in helping healthcare professionals make well-informed decisions quickly. It achieves this by presenting a significant amount of data as solid evidence. Furthermore, for patients who require ongoing care, the ability to monitor their health status and operational metrics in real-time becomes essential. This assists in promptly identifying patterns and potential issues throughout the treatment process. Conversely, if I were a patient, I would highly value a dashboard that can effectively track my individual health metrics, especially when I’m making lifestyle changes to enhance my overall well-being.
When crafting such a dashboard, my focus would be on the intended users. It’s crucial to ensure that the dashboard is user-friendly and responsive to user interactions. The information presentation should be clear and meaningful, achieved through the use of easily understandable visual aids like graphs and charts. Additionally, including alert mechanisms is vital. For example, if a person’s weight consistently remains high over a period of time, the dashboard could activate an alert suggesting the need for increased exercise.

I think a dashboard gives healthcare professionals a lot more intuitive view of the general picture and saves them time and effort to try to visualize the data in their brain. Neatly compiled data combined with visual input allows healthcare workers to make quick and informed decisions. For example, if a patient’s information such as his BP or weight is recorded only as numbers in a table, the medical workers will have to extract the numbers from the paper, and attempt to visualize the temporal relationship and changes: is it rising or falling over last month? last year? A good dashboard would solve all these problems by presenting everything visually in a line chart/bar chart so that the workers won’t have to think anymore, they will see the data come to life. It also allows the general public to understand difficult medical data more easily. For example, during the COVID pandemic, Johns Hopkins University published a dashboard for COVID statistics. This allowed the general public to understand the global trend of the pandemic data.
I think the important characteristics of a dashboard are the exact same as that of the usage of language: it must be clear and concise. The colours and formats of the chart should be easy to read with all the important figures in sharp colours. The dashboard should not be overly complex (or else it will fail to achieve the effort of extraction and simplification), so only essential elements should be presented instead of attempting to present all the patient data in a dashboard. Of course, detailed characteristics would need to depend on the end user and the purpose of the dashboard itself.

Dashboards in healthcare are essential for real-time decision-making, quick situation analysis, and ongoing surveillance. They provide actionable insights to healthcare professionals, from clinicians to administrators, aiding in effective resource allocation and patient care. A well-designed dashboard should be user-centered, offering role-based customization to meet the specific needs of its users. It should be intuitive, visually clear, and interactive, allowing for real-time data analysis. Additionally, it should include features like alerts for critical situations and be compliant with healthcare regulations. By focusing on these elements, healthcare providers can significantly improve their service delivery and patient outcomes.

A healthcare data dashboard is really important because it helps doctors and administrators see complicated data easily. In a busy and data-heavy healthcare world, these dashboards let us check on patients, machines, and important numbers in real-time. This means we can act quickly and make smart decisions. Dashboards also make things clear by showing trends and important information, making it easier to diagnose, plan treatments, and use resources better. They save time by not having to look for data the hard way, making patient care better and hospitals work smoother.
To design an effective dashboard, I will consider the following:
1. Prioritize user needs and preferences.
2. Ensure seamless data integration from various sources.
3. Enable real-time updates and interactive, intuitive features.
4. Focus on security, scalability, and mobile responsiveness.
5. Incorporate effective data visualization and relevant KPIs while providing user training and feedback mechanisms for ongoing improvement. -

In my opinion, having dashboard of data visualisation in healthcare organisation is really useful because it allows you to understand the complex data in the easy way using less time comparing with reading the full and unorganised report. Also. in healthcare, the dashboard can help executives in decision making as it is up-to-date information. For example, the dashboard that displays the trend of a KPIs in realtime will help executives and health professionals promptly modify the strategies to enhance the performance of organization. If I design a dashboard, I will put only one-page screen that contains all key information. It should provide the users with a clear story of all information with the most significants insights are placed on the top of dashboard. Also, there should be table, graphs or charts that help simplify the complex data instead of too many letters and numbers. The colour of the dashboard should be simple but have the important information highlighted which help draw the readers’ attention. Most importantly, a good dashboard should be relevant with the contents and created based on the purposes; operational, tactical or strategic dashboard.

Dashboard is a powerful tool for analysis of health programs in several ways. It can be used in different levels in the industry ranging from front line workers to senior management level. At operational level, staff can evaluate the activities, allocate budget, estimate materials and track progress of projects. When it comes to senior management level, progress towards indicators can be tracked and provide guidance and feedback to overcome challenges.
Characteristic of dashboard I will consider is that
• It should be based on timely and accurate data.
• It can extract useful information for analyzing the progress and decision making.
• It gives clear and concise information with more visibility tools such as charts, graphs, etc.
• User friendly and interactive dashboard for users as well. -

This is clear as the dashboard for data visualization plays an important role in healthcare for several reasons. I think the most important one is to provide insights into data-driven decision-making for healthcare providers by allowing them to quickly grasp patterns and abnormalities for better patient care. I would also think the dashboard contributes to the opportunities to save healthcare costs because it can assist in tracking the costs where the resource can be used more effectively both individually and in the healthcare industry as a whole. From the public health perspective, the dashboard is an invaluable tool for providing up-to-date information on disease outbreaks, enabling rapid responses, contact tracing, and resource allocation during pandemics or epidemics.
As in the paper that was described a dashboard is a visual display or presentation mechanism, not solely a software product, there will be a lot of important characteristics that we need to follow in essential data visualization principles and performance metrics presentation. I will consider the dashboard to be simple to provide the needed information in a sparse way using a user-centered design. I will also apply the best display medium (table, graphs, Icons with relevant usage) for communicating data effectively. I value the characteristics of a dashboard in maintaining accountability, transparency, and data security simultaneously, which is also crucial to the implementation and use of a dashboard. Plus, all of my classmates’ discussions of the characteristics are notable.
