There are three types of Information System (TPS, MIS, and DSS). Have you ever worked or had experience with any type of them in a system? Please briefly explain what that system is about including the input, process, and output of the system.

I had experience with Transaction Processing Systems or TPS. During transaction at ATM, I input the phone number and press the code to confirm transaction. The process will be Real-Time Processing, input information -> sent a request or electronic petition to Bank -> Bank check status -> Bank approve withdrawal -> I get the money as the output.
Ps. I don’t know is it correct but I understand like that.
Thank you

In my daily life, I mostly experienced with the TPS system. For example, when I book the airline ticket which is a real-time processing. Firstly, I have to input date, time and destination of the trip and then system will process the fare and the other fee of the ticket. Secondly, I input the passenger name and make an online payment, then I got the ticket as an output.

An airline seat reservation system is a big TPS. It needs special software and database, not only to manage the transactions, but also manage the data lock too. Since the system is accessed simultaneously by many operators including customers, to provent double booking, the system must be able to lock the empty seat data record until the reservation is successfully made.

I had never been aware of these systems in my daily life. However, a quick web-based research showed that TPS (Transaction processing system) is used for day-to-day business operational activities and its output is daily basis transaction report. MIS (Management Information System) and DSS (Decision Support System) are both used to support the decision-making process. While DSS aims to support top-management in unstructured decision making, MIS supports the middle-management by providing information such as sales/ cost analysis processed from TPS outputs.

You have mentioned the three types of information systems. Each of them has a supportive relationship with other types. TPS is usually the basic data source for other types of information system, MIS mainly uses data from TPS system, while DSS emphasizes decision making and uses information from MIS system and some external data to help improve or formulate work plans that must meet the main goals of the organization.

I am familiar with TPS (as a user) since it is very common and easy to find in daily life. For example, online shopping, internet banking, movie ticket booking that process in real-time. The data input might be the choice I make (items I want, the account number that I want to transfer, amount of money, the seat I select in the theatre). The system process by checking with the latest status/information (amount of items left in the stock, amount of money that is available for transfer, validity of account number, availability of the seat) and change the status to my intention. The output is the new status of the account, the right to own goods (although I did not get the item immediately), and the system might generate the documents to prove the status that has changed (eg. receipt, ticket, proof of bank transfer)
For MIS, my old workplace has an MIS website provided for employees to organize many tasks related to working in the institution such as requesting proof of employment, arranging the schedule for the study room.
I have no experience with DSS.

Typically, in an organization, not many staffs use DSS, it depends on their roles. Since DSS is an interactive software that may include an AI, data warehouse, data mining, modelling, and visualization dashboard tools, so I think, the reason why few people use DSS, it is not only about roles, but also the software license. It is expensive. I’m not surprised you have never experienced with it.

In my daily life, I think that TPS is the most commonly used system. such as online shopping, internet banking, etc. It used direct information from customers as input. Then processing directly within the system. Output sent to both customer and service provider.
MIS is a little complicated than the former system. MIS used multiple data sources as input. Then processing directly within the system.
DSS is the most complicated system. A clinical decision support system is an example. Automated Chest X-ray Interpretation was created to interpret chest x-ray, which isn’t binary data. and need to train computer vision before interpreting chest x-ray into binary(word) data.-
2021-08-13 at 1:03 am #29861Pongthep MiankaewParticipant
The chest x-ray interpreation system is another example of DSS used in healthcare. I think the method you have mentioned is “machine learning”. Certainly, it is necessary to teach the machine with algorithm how to predict the outcome as accurately as possible.

The TPS (Transaction processing system )might be the most common use in daily practice, for example, shopping at the department store. The input includes transactions or buying goods, the processing is updating of stock supply, and output would be detailed report to the company.
For the MIS (management information system), as far as I know, my department uses the Operative Scheduling System (OSS) to manage an operative schedule. The inputs would be the operation date and time that you put into the program, the processing is the arrangement and queuing patients, and the output is the whole picture of the operating schedule of every surgeon that you can see all week and maybe the entire month.
For the DDS (Decision supporting system), I suppose that the coronary heart disease score might fit this system. The input includes many variables, for example, age, sex, cholesterol level, blood pressure, and smoking status that you fill into the application, the processing is the calculation of this score and classified according to risk. The output would help the physician to decide the proper management.-
2021-08-13 at 1:22 am #29862Pongthep MiankaewParticipant
Of course, your OSS system is an example of MIS. I think it uses transactional data from your TPS that is entered into the system on a daily basis.
In order to get accurate and timely MIS reports, your developers have to build a query module to retrieve the TPS data to produce reports in various formats according to users’ conditions and to be able to manage schedules and operating rooms effectively.

Could you share more about OSS? Can it handle different priorities of operation like emergency, urgency, and elective? And are there any problems related to this system and how to solve them?

Like others, TPS in the most common type of IS that I am familiar with.
For example, I am a project manager for vaccine reservation and scheduling in my hospital.
An input for the vaccine reservation are number of vaccine doses that customer want to reserve, names, DOB, etc.
For a process, I just use simple application to calculate total doses and collect other data. So, an output is number of doses, total amount of money involve in this system and other details.
This simple TPS is helpful for us to manage the vaccine reservation, such as, help us know how much of money that we have to spend to buy enough vaccine for all customers. For MIS and DSS, I used some risk calculation applications and also AI for chest X-ray that can suggest what wrong with patients’ films.
Honestly, I don’t clearly understand what exactly is MIS. I’ve googled and read about these three type but I don’t clearly see good example that help me to clarify differences between these 3 types. I will complete lecture 1.5 soon, maybe I could understand more.

I also have experience with managing vaccine reservations, too. The difference is, for my setting, the process is just putting the name on the list and the output is the queue number. Because there are many ways to input the data (websites, call centers, and face-to-face reservations) the process must be real-time to avoid conflict when the reservation is input at the same time.

Thank you for sharing. It’s such a good idea to running queue.
In my setting this process includes payment for the vaccine (I’m now working for a private hospital), So it’s quite complex and the output was a little bit messy.

I agree with the others that TPS is the most common type of IS that we have experience with. In terms of daily life tasks, I used e-commerce a lot. The input would be what items I want to order, pay the right amount to the merchant’s bank account. Then I would get feedback that my order is processed. The output of that would be the status of the order, whether it was successfully delivered to me or not.
For MIS, if my understanding is correct, it would require doing a little bit of analysis. For example, in my work now I am responsible to collect a survey. The input is the participants’ answer, the processing part is collecting all of the answers, and the output is the summary of all of the answers such as how many people answer “Yes” in question 1 and so on.
I have not had any experience with DSS so far, but I think it will be interesting to incorporate a more advanced technique to help us in making a decision.
-
2021-08-14 at 1:57 am #29910Pongthep MiankaewParticipant
Yes, your opinion about MIS is correct. An MIS provides reports based on routine flows of data from TPS, like your survey data. The MIS is applied to decision-making at all levels. It helps to retrieve information quickly. Most of them involve structured problems, focusing on solving routine problems.

I have experience with TPS (Transaction Processing System) daily while grocery shopping, online shopping, paying bills, and reservation of tickets. For instance, while doing self-service check out I scanned the grocery items, no of bags which are the input data. Those data are processed and stored and the bills are paid.
I have experienced MIS ( Management Information System ) while performing employee work performance evaluations in my previous job. -

TSS is the most common system I encounter in daily life. Whenever I buy something at a convenience store or on an e-commerce application, the data such as which products , payment method, delivery method and address is all data input to the company to be processed. Then the processing checks the available stocks whether they can provide it or not. After this process, the confirmation and receipt will be sent to the buyer.
Considering MIS, I think that the system in blood banks is health MIS which receives the data input from blood donors and then processes to check how much available of each blood group and components, then the output is to allocate the blood components to the requesting hospital. But, I am not sure if EMR is one of the health MIS.
For DSS, I have experience with CDSS like CPOE, which can help determine drug-drug interaction, drug- condition interaction, drug allergy and dosage of drugs in pediatric. CDSS in diagnostic radiology, helping in chest film interpretation, and the ophthalmology, detecting abnormality in retina are also the systems I have used before.

I was familiar with Decision Support Systems (DSS) and Transaction Processing Systems (TPS) when I did my internship in the hospital. There was a program that predicted the Vancomycin level in blood, which required the serum Vancomycin concentration and relevant predictors as the input. Then, it processed these data through the various pharmacokinetic models. Finally, it visualized the predicted Vancomycin level as a graph, as the output. We then determined the appropriate dose regimen by the graph. I convinced that it was categorized into DSS.
Unknowingly, I exposed to TPS when I was in chemotherapy unit. They used the program to calculate the amount of vial medication that needed to be prepared. It required the patient’s body surface area and target drug concentration as the input. Then, it processed some calculation and told them the result as the number of the vial and the milliliter of medication that needed to use per doctor order.

For my daily life as a physician at provincial hospital in COVID-19 pandemic, I worked as the team member and user of the provincial COVID-19 vaccination system which I think that one of management information system (MIS) example. The system processes the data of vaccinated citizen in the province and generate the weekly report about it. For shortly, the input such as characteristic of vaccinated people, comorbid disease, and few of physical problems, run into statistical analysis (process) to generate the weekly official report as a percentage/graph/and the proportion of vaccinated patient in the specific area (output).
