Agree! Sometimes people do not realize until we have a solid evidence or measurement to show that problem. Information is really important!

I think our country does not declare public health emergency for the air pollution yet. Probably the government still think that the situation is “under control” based on our capacity and capability 🙂

Chalermphol, Do you think that this air pollution in the North can be called as “Public Health Emergency”? Or it’s just a normal public health problem.

Good point! Blood pressure monitoring alone might not truly reflect hypertension, as some patients may currently on treatment. In addition, how could we prevent duplicated records if a person go to multiple drug store. You may need to record identification number of a person (probably citizen ID), but could we do that at drug store?

Yes. Analytic and research support are very good functions that can help to improve the surveillance activities. However, to get a good and reliable results, you need good and valid dataset to work with. So, the surveillance system should have timely, accurate, and complete reporting cases.

Please select one disease that you would like to have an early warning system. How the early warning system would benefit the surveillance of that particular disease?

In November 2019, there was a report of 3 cases of plaque in China. The first two cases were referred from Mongolia and got diagnosed in Beijing. These two cases later died. The first case was found in Nov 3, but the government officially informed the WHO in Nov 13. More than 40 people with close contact to the patients were quarantined. Moreover,…[Read more]

I like the idea of having blood pressure measurement at pharmacy. Then you need to think about how to get information from the pharmacy into the system.

Beside realtime report, I think we may need to have a good alert system to warn when the outbreak is likely to occur.

Thanks for sharing the interesting article. Obtaining data from private sectors is always a big challenge for the surveillance system. Data from the national surveillance system mostly received from the public sectors. Almost all cases diagnosed and treated in private clinics or hospitals are rarely reported to the national surveillance system.…[Read more]

Thanks for sharing! Fragmented systems are the main problem for disease surveillance. This could also result in data quality and timeliness of the system.

I agree, as NCD is more and more prevalent now. It become a major public health problem in many countries. However, the structure of surveillance system for NCD might need to be adjusted and might be a bit different from the routine surveillance system for infectious diseases.

In the case study of the surveillance of melioidosis disease, it is interesting to see a large discrepancy of number of deaths between the national reporting system and the actual number of death cases from hospitals. We would not be able to recognize this until we did the evaluation.
What would be the consequences of inaccurate data reported to…[Read more]
