Hello all, it seems you got a unanimous vote here. Air quality has been a major public health concern in Thailand especially in the northern part. Some of our classmates are actually working in that region and could provide some insights about the situation. Look forward to your presentation! Well done all!

Hello all, good articles! I agree with the comments. The dengue paper is more descriptive. However there’s room for discussions. We believe that not only geographical and meteorological factors can drive dengue incidence, but also host immunity profile. That’s unfortunate they didn’t present serotype maps when doing PCR… For the influenza paper…[Read more]

Hello all, the two are good examples of how we can apply similar tools we have seen in our class to current situations. However one seems to be heavier on new materials we haven’t covered in class which is to be more in TMHG 517. So you would need to spend more time to self study those materials and I think it will be intense for you since we…[Read more]

Hello all, both papers demonstrate the use of GIS technology. Malaria is approaching the elimination stage while TB is still a public health concern in Thailand. I think it is down to which application interests you more. Well done!

Hello all, Good picks, Koonthida! You may notice that I rarely make a definite statement as I believe in academic freedom to be expressed. However I would like to say that the first paper (lung cancer) presents the very similar methods we will use in TMHG 517 which I think it is a good idea to use as an introduction for those who are taking in the…[Read more]

Hello all, good comments! I like seeing this environment. Healthy discussions are a good basis of scientific advancement. I don’t want to convince which one is better but I think one is a bit easier to follow than the other. Please be reminded you have only 12 minutes to present. The rubric has been provided. However don’t be much worried if you…[Read more]

Hello all and good article choices, Chanapong! You make the group inconclusive. Like your folks said, both are good examples of GIS/spatial technology in different ways. I think it comes down to which application you like better… I have provided the JC rubric which will be used next week. My only comment is for you to choose one that interests…[Read more]

Hello all, it’s quite a unanimous vote. I don’t want to persuade which one is better but your classmates got a few points. I’m also glad to see not only GIS/methods comments, but some epidemiological statements are also provided. Overall this seems to be a good start, Penpitcha!

Hello Thongchai, in general I’d say yes however it depends on the IRB or EC committee. The general rule is that the patients cannot be identifiable on the map. In some cases, anonymity is also not enough and IRB/EC still requires to present the data on an aggregate level. It has to be careful when presenting patient’s locations. Hope this helps.

Yes totally fine… A few years would be considered recently. Go for them and pick ones you’d like to share with the class. Your understanding and confidence are priority. Hope this helps!

I understand students might not have explored a lot of analytical tools which will be covered more in TMHG517. So I suggest you choose the papers you feel confident to present and focus more on the purposes of the tools instead of the details. However you should be able to discuss why the authors chose those tools and how to interpret the results.…[Read more]

Hello Tullaya and Pyae Phyo Aung, good questions and comments. That’s true we need good data which can mean differently in different contexts. I suggest for your work to investigate how the data were collected before you analyze and interpret. That would be unfortunate and unethical if one presented ‘make-up’ data which could cost their career as…[Read more]

Hello Tullaya and Ameen, I realize that students may not have sufficient GIS background at this point to choose ones. No worries… More VDO clips of GIS concepts and applications on health research will be provided next week for you to explore. I just didn’t want to pill up too much work this week as you already have a QGIS tutorial which may be…[Read more]
