Hi Everyone,
I am developing the Measle surveillance system and kindly review the presentation for more information.
Objective
Measle is a vaccine preventable disease and commonly occurs in under five-year children if the child did not receive immunization two times at 9 month and 18month of the age. In Myanmar, beyond coup, Immunization coverage is decreasing year by year. Vaccination coverage for key antigens, including MCV1 (43.9%) and MCV2 (42.2%), dropped below 50% in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and political instability, creating a serious threat of major outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases [WHO/UNICEF Estimates of National Immunization Coverage, 2021], thereby increasing the risk of outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs), such as measles, diphtheria and polio.
If we could not detect the case early and could not conduct immunization, it will become outbreak and public health emergencies in few years. Moreover, it is rapidly infectious disease and can transmit via respiratory tract. It is also one of Disease under national surveillance (DUNS) in Myanmar.
Types of surveillance system
Population based active surveillance system is considered to detect cases in the community through Community-Based Surveillance Volunteers (CBSVs). These volunteers are responsible for monitoring and reporting suspected measles cases in the community to ensure real-time case identification for immediate investigation.
Case definition for surveillance
A suspected measles case is defined as any case with fever and maculopapular rash under five-year-old children.
Community-based volunteers will inform the health staff to confirm the cases. Health staff will proceed the confirmation steps.
