ParticipantA Digital Disease Surveillance System for Ethnic Health
Our eHealth project is an initiative digital disease surveillance system to provide early warning, alert and response for outbreaks in ethnic areas, adapted from WHO’s EWARS framework.
The system uses two approaches:
Indicator-Based Surveillance (IBS): Health facilities submit weekly reports on major diseases using the Kobo Collect mobile app (both online and offline). This data feeds into an automated dashboard that visualizes disease trends and alerts.
Event-Based Surveillance (EBS): For unusual health events, the system automatically scans local news by using Appscript to central database and monitors global sources like ProMED and HealthMap.Key Improvements to Current Practice:
Proactive Approach: We can see early warning signs instead of waiting for outbreaks to be confirmed.
Digital Efficiency: Mobile data collection and reporting reduce the human error and delays common with paper-based system.
Data-Driven Decisions: The real-time dashboard provides public health insights to make timely decisions. This system has already demonstrated significant value, enabling faster outbreak containment for diseases including Cholera, Whooping Cough, and Dengue in project surveillance areas.

ParticipantHi Mio!
It’s a great presentation! I like your conclusion part, “eHealth is more than IT system, it creates faster, smarter, and more connected surveillance system”.
Just a quick comment from my end. In addition to your points mentioned about improving current health practices, I think this app/system improves health outcomes by reducing the cost of repetitive training and supervision compared to the paper-based reporting system, which is more prone to errors/data loss and requires close, frequent supervision to minimize mistakes. It could also enhance customer satisfaction by providing data transparency, allowing stakeholders to monitor real-time situations and take necessary actions. In addition, the system is accessible in ethnic areas with poor Internet connectivity and promotes a sense of inclusiveness within ethnic communities.
