This is a very interesting question! We completely rely on ICD and I actually cannot imagine how chaos it could be without it. ICD is the main basis for health recording and statistics on disease, as well as on cause of death certificates. These information and statistics support our payment systems, service planning, and also health services research. The worst I could think of is when we have safety issues (i.e., pandemic) and we do not know which group of illnesses contribute to the pandemic then we cannot prevent or treat them on timely manner.
